Paul Smith’s College Fun Facts 

  • Home to the only sawmill in the US that is completely run and operated by students with faculty supervision.
  • 50+ professors have expertise in fields ranging from Antarctic field research to running kitchens in four-star resorts.
  • Paul Smith’s son, Phelps Smith, wrote in his will before he passed that the former hotel be turned into an institution and forever be known as Paul Smith’s College of Arts and Science.
  • Paul Smith’s College was originally the first wilderness resort in the Adirondacks.
  • You can canoe/kayak from campus to the Statue of Liberty. 
  • Paul Smith’s College is the only 4-year college in the Adirondacks. 
  • Paul Smith’s Hotel was visited by former presidents Grover Cleveland, Theodore Roosevelt, Calvin Coolidge and celebrity P.T. Barnum. 
  • Our Woodsmen’s team has been featured on Disney+ and National Geographic. 
  • In January 2023, Paul Smith’s College housed 500 athletes for the 2023 FISU World University Games in Lake Placid. The event hosted 2,500 athletes from more than 600 universities in 50 countries. 
  • Paul Smith’s College has 14,200 acres of land, the same size as Manhattan.
  • The forestry cabin was constructed by students. 
  • The Leaning Pine was chopped down by two students whose axes were not sharp enough and received a bad grade. The tree was their way to retaliate. 
  • Essex and Franklin dorms were built for housing for the 1980 Winter Olympics.  
  • We still have the original stagecoach from when the college was a resort in the 19th century.
  • We have our own sugar bush with more than 2,000 taps that students tap during the Maple Class.
  • We have two draft horses—Dana and Dodge.
  • Our forestry department has a partnership with Davey Tree Services.
